It looks like Disney has decided to make a drastic change of course, with IGN’s sources reporting that “Puzzle 2” underwent numerous edits during the making of the cartoon, during which the cartoon was stripped of any hints of an unconventional relationship between the characters.

Former Pixar employees revealed that Disney required them to remove any hints of a romantic connection between Riley and Val. According to the source “a lot of work was done to make sure no one would see an unconventional relationship in the cartoon.”

Another Pixar source told IGN that the company’s executives were uncomfortable with the presence of hints of an unconventional relationship in the original version of the cartoon, so “an important task throughout the making of the cartoon was to make sure that no hints of that were left behind.”

IGN suggests that the removal of LGBT elements from “Puzzle 2” is Disney’s direct response to the box office failure of “Buzz Lightyear,” which featured a same-sex kiss.
